My first Dharma Voyage Tai Chi class was an “Aha!” moment. It resonated from its first few minutes as something I had been searching for. I recall thinking on my way home that Taekwondo, the Korean martial art I had been studying for 16 years, was indeed my past but that Tai Chi was my future. Just like that. Most Asian martial arts are in one way or another models for life. My understanding is simplistic, but it seems they take slightly different paths to much the same end. One of my own objectives was to take up the unfinished business of athletic challenges I had walked away from in my 20s, not to make the next Olympics in rowing (my sport at the time), but to deal with those challenges, even well past my athletic prime, in a more satisfactory way. Tai Chi is a joyous and confounding challenge that has even led me back to rowing. It is the model for life that I best connect with.
