FAQs

1. What is Dharma Voyage?

Dharma Voyage is a nonprofit organization based in Westport, Massachusetts, founded in 2009 by Ben Booth. We offer:

  • Adult Community Rowing

  • Youth Rowing Programs

  • Race Training

  • Boatbuilding

  • Volunteer opportunities

Our mission is to cultivate practices that enhance both mind and body in a supportive, nature-centered setting.

2. Who runs Dharma Voyage?

  • Board of Directors: Judy Norton (President), Sue Benfeito (Treasurer), Laura Vaughan (Secretary), Susan Barnard, Alicia Green, Sarah Innes.

  • Staff & Volunteers: Desiree Brunton serves as Manager, supported by several dedicated committees (Community Rowing, Youth Programming Outreach, Fundraising, Grant Writing), plus boat maintenance and coaching volunteers.

3. How do I sign up for rowing?

  • We use Sign-Up Genius for scheduling rows. All rows must be signed up for in advance.

  • Rowers may sign up for up to two rows per week. If a row isn’t filled 24 hours ahead, it’s open to all.

  • Please sign up by 6 PM the evening before your scheduled row, as coxswains need time to plan.

  • If a row is canceled due to weather, you’ll be notified by email.

4. Where do rows occur, and is parking available?

  • Rows launch from Hix Bridge Landing on the east branch of the Westport River.

  • Westport residents may need a $30 parking permit from the Town Hall (not required until joining as a member).

  • Limited visitor parking and permits are available for non-residents. Please park carefully to ensure boat trailers and fishermen have access.

5. Can anyone join, or do I need experience?

Yes! Rowing programs are open to everyone, beginners included.

  • Adult Community Rowing: Welcomes all fitness and experience levels. Gentle, supportive coaching is provided.

  • Race Training: Designed for individuals looking to improve technique, fitness, and optionally, race.

6. What are the youth programs like?

  • We offer affordable, volunteer-run youth rowing in partnership with the Westport Recreation Department.

  • These programs are partly funded by adult membership and largely supported through donations and grants. Sponsors are always needed!

7. What is the Boatbuilding Program?

  • After a period of restructuring, community boatbuilding has resumed. Over the past eight years, Dharma Voyage has built nine boats and introduced boatbuilding skills to over 100 Westport students.

  • Programs include design, hands-on boat assembly, woodworking, and maritime history—all taught in partnership with local schools and community members.

8. How can I volunteer?

  • Volunteers are critical to Dharma Voyage’s success—in roles such as boat maintenance, event support, coaching, grant writing, and more. Committees include Community Rowing, Youth Programming Outreach, and Fundraising.

  • Help can come in many forms; just let us know what you’re interested in and we’ll plug you in.

9. Is rowing safe, and what do I need to know?

  • Safety is our top priority. Every boat is equipped with PFDs (life jackets), and rowers are strongly encouraged to wear them.

  • Dress appropriately for the weather, ideally in layers, and bring water. After a few minutes of rowing, your body heats up quickly!

  • You’ll fill out emergency contact information upon registration, and it’s kept available during all rows.

10. How does weather affect rowing?

  • We aim to row in good conditions, but if weather makes a rowing session unsafe, it will be canceled and you’ll be notified via email.

  • Light drizzle is usually fine, but high wind, lightning, or unsafe conditions will cancel the row.
